Major 4WD Roll Over. DUW.

Well, the weather was better today, although I still felt like I was struggling a bit in the mottled light.

The 4WD challenge today was a hill climb. This hill climb was bloody steep, rough and slippery. I could hardly walk up the course.

This guy came a bit hard and fast. I have the whole sequence, from go to 'WOAH!' but will only post a few. The vehicle, although a right off, still was able to be driven. The driver and passenger were both taken to hospital, but not badly hurt. The vehicle rolled onto it's roof a total of three times.

I made the mistake of rushing down the hill to see if they were okay. As they say, gravity sucks, and I slipped flat onto my back, holding a d2h with small lens in one hand, and D2h with big lens in the other. I had time to think "hands up" before a gave myself a whiplash and bruised back. Cameras are safe. Oh well, could have been worse, I could have been in the Suzuki!

Unfortunately that is the price for doing that sort of thing (4WD hillclimbing). Lucky he pulled his head back in from the first shot.

nice, i've rolled in a soft top suzuki sierra 4wd before, great experience it was. lol. was uninjured, not a scratch or bruise.... the emergency services jaw's hit the floor when i climbed out from it unscathed. still got the car, still runs fine, but now i have taken to it with a grinder and it doesn't have a windshield, tops of doors, roll bar etc. great little 4wd

As said by others, certainly a great sequence of photos of the roll over, if you have more to fill in the gaps you could make a nice animation of it... except for the angle of the photos, which I personally found to be annoying. Having to tilt my head to the right to look at the scene - car and people and their reactions in the background detracted from it for me. I think it would be spectacular enough when viewed at a normal angle!

Thankfully the buffer didn't fill too quickly!

The D2h sure has a big buffer. I run it with Sandisk Extreme III cards, so it writes almost as fast as the buffer fills.

The angle was the lesser of two evils. They had safety tape set up, so all the shots were at this angle, or else the safety tape got in the shot. It's annoying and I couldn't think of a way around it. But, you gotta work with what you got!

Raskill - I shoot a lot of 4WD events (it is my specialty) and as you so rightly point out mottled light is one of the biggest problems we face. The other is remembering that we are there to photograph an event not to assist. In the early days I missed a lot of incidents because of this, by trying to assist you risked yourself and cameras. The officials are there for that and for the most part they know what they are doing.

Thanks guys appreciate the comments. I really don't know what to do with the roll over pics. Several sources have said to send them to 4WD Monthly, but that I'll need to include the words to go with it....

I knew that as I was falling on my ass, a jolt back to reality. I guess it was just the cop in me trying to escape for a few minutes!

On a happier note, the driver has contacted me requesting the images, so theres another sale!
