some nice pics there.

I have a tried a few times to get these, and I can only get the kites in if I am at about 18mm, and right under the surfer.

I am trying to get shots while they are in flight, with blue sky behind them, with the horizon in the background and water under so within the shot, you can apprecaite the height these nuts get up to.

an exciting sport to watch, and a freightening sport to try without instruction (speaking from personal experience, having taken flight on dry ground holding onto one of these things)...

I am keen to get down to St. Kilda soon with my new 80-400, should give me great versatility, and reach

You're right about it being near impossible to get the kites in the shot as well.

I know from shooting kite surfers here in Adelaide that they become very predictable. Here they all go in and out from the shore in a pattern and most of them always try and get their big airs close to the shore (to show off I'm sure). If you watch them and try and understand their pattern you can get some better shots.

The only problem here in Adelaide is that the kite surfers are out in the afternoons which means I'm often shooting into the light. It has made for some nice silhouette shots, but in general I'd prefer to have the light coming from behind me...

Yeah the slow focus would make it more difficult... The first of those albums I have with kite surfing photos also contains photos taken with a cheap lens...

if you look at my pics on my website, http://robw.smugmug.com/gallery/749189#33037955 yes you are right they are pedictable, you get to know when they are going to jump, and try to follow them ! i have a lot of trouble getting them in focus

You've got some great shots there Rob. I didn't realise there were so many kite surfers in Whyalla, or are they taken somewhere else?

Were you standing in the water for some of those photos?

all the kiteboarding pics were taken in whyalla, and yes i was standing/sitting in the water depending if i had my underwater cover on the camera or my 200-400 on a tripod, and dont ask an inexperienced kiteboarder to "come closer" you end up looking sad like this
