low key portraits. sulphur crested cockatoos
been working on low key stuff lately. the first one is another attempt at low key portraits of our native birds. does the darker whites bother you or do you prefer white to be white.? d2x 80-400 vr @ 400 400iso f8. sb800 @ -2ev first 1/125 second 1/60 both handheld edit: whites popped a bit as per suggestions Steve Last edited by avkomp on Wed Aug 02, 2006 11:43 pm, edited 2 times in total.

Steve - this is a difficult one to answer. White, as you know, has no definition so you have to rely very much on the slight shading caused by feathers. I would say that somewhere between the first shot and the second would be near to the ideal.

the issue I caused myself was to go for a black background.
normally I may well have used more fill. I personally think the whites need a little extra, nonetheless I quite like the first. thanks guys. check out my image gallery @

I am with Chris on the white issue, and whilst I like the second the best, somewhere between the two would probably be about right.

Steve, I think the first one is a cracker of a shot. The white in the second appears to have a bluish hint which dulls it somewhat - however viewed by itself the whites do not seem so bad and if you had posted this alone then others wouldn't have been squawking over it.

I like the first one. The feather details is excellent. 2nd one makes me wonna smack the bugger they are so distructive rippin at everything they can
