Wolfmother in Brisbane

Four favs of the 300 or so shots from last night's Wolfmother gig:
I was impressed that the lighting at the gig was bright enough to shoot at ISO1000 instead of ISO1600 and the noise was nowhere near as bad as I expected. I just really wish I had a wider angle F1.8 lens.

What I really struggled with is the having to dodge flying bodies as moshers came over the barriers on top of the security and on occasion right over me. Nearly got bowled over by security a few times as they tried to catch bodies but stayed on my feet ok.

Nice shots. The lighting at the gigs must be difficult to deal with, even though it's bright, so many different colour spots must be a hassle.

Good luck in this venture, and well done photographing this band. I don't like them much, but they have the potential to be something grand, and you were there on the ground floor.

Aside from the shots (which I like), how was the band? Their recorded stuff is great (+/- the occasional OTT lyrics which sound like they belong in 1967, not that there is really anything wrong with that)

Byrt, I'd have loved to shoot with two cameras, one with a Canon 85mmF1.2 and the other a nikkor wide angle prime but I had only the first three songs and the one D70 with a 50mmF1.8 to use. Chopping feet of was pissing me off too... but I am just glad I didnt chop off heads.

I'm wondering how the other media shooter went with her non SLR - I think it was a sony. Never got to ask who she was shooting for.

Greg, live, they are amsolutely amazing. Andrew has an amazing stage presence. The style they enjoy is nothing like that which I prefer but I know talent and skill when I hear it. Seriously I would love to hear Andrew play flamenco again. His skills with any form of guitar just blow me away.

I can second that Mark, I know we were all blown away. All of the younger members were saying wow these guys know how to rock, while all of the "more experienced" members were reliving childhoods with that great 70's sound

I noticed that you used manual exposure for these shots instead of say Ap. Just wondering if you dialed in your settings and waited for the light to adjust to your liking or if the light was the same strength all night...

Hi Steve, from what I can see, they are pretty much already at the top of their game. They've headlined so many tours through the US and are featured by winamp and itunes and there's little else for them to do but to continue touring, write more and head back to LA for another album to cut in the new year. LOL @ Jonesy, I WISH that first three songs had been their longer tracks but I would have had about 15-20min max ducking the falling crowdsurfers.
I also wish I'd been able to take the 300mmF2.8 for after the first three songs as the view from where I waited through the gig was clear and Andrew's theatrics were very entertaining.

Wendell, thanks the hue and brightness of the lighting was the best I'd seen at any gig to date. Certainly Andrew was very happy with how the shots looked and he said he was glad I captured the gig here in Brisbane and not at Melb Festival Hall whose lighting was apparently abhorrent.
... and that was a cool jacket.

Thommo, the D70 in Ap was just not co-operating with the backlit scene well enough for me so I did as you have guessed and set the camera and then waited for the lighting to suit my settings. Luckily that was often enough to go through over two gig in three songs.

Shot 3 is my favorite, I saw Wolf Mother at Splendor in the Grass last weekend in Byron Bay, still recovering. Dynamic performance to say the least and one of the highlights of the weekend. A contrast to the last act of the night, Brian Wilson singing Beach Boy songs, Brian was definitely propped up by his band who were infectiously enthusiastic making up for Brian’s eccentricities. Have taken a camera along to Splendor in prior years as a punter without much joy, from your shots a back stage pass looks like it paid off.

I like the last two that were posted as well Really shows the energy from the gig.

I don't think a 300 2.8 would have benefitted that much as some of the shots looked a tad underexposed with the 50mm 1.8. Have a look at adding the 50 1.4 and 85mm 1.4 to your kit

the 50mmF1.8 wasn't so much underexposing the shots as much as the D70 sensor chip was suffering from extremes of lighting that I used whitebalance tweaking to try to correct. It's a pity that lighting technicians for gigs seem to never take into mind how their works effects still photography of a gig.

I do seriously want to get a 50mmF1.4 and the Sigma 20mmF1.8 for those gigs where the 50mm isn't wide enough to capture movement up close.
