The first two explode with energy and momentum. The rigor of the moment is really well caught. I like the last one because it's sort of leading up to something, and you can see his eyes and the welling up of energy. The third one sort of peters out.

I too have missed your surf shots Max.
Agreed #1 and #2 are the pick of this series from a subject capture point of view, but compared to #3 and #4 they look a little grainy on my monitor.
#4 looks like you where in the water only metres from the subject.

Cheers,
Greg

Yep Tony, I think pixspot is playing up again, seems to only work as a URL.

Thanks to all for the comments, IMHO these shots are pretty rusty, I think with sports photography you need a certain amount of timing and I don't have it at the moment.

Hopefully next week I may be able to get up to Snapper Rocks and see some pros in action with D70 in hand.

G'day Greg, #4 was maybe 40-50 metres away, the el cheapo Tamron 300mm for all it's faults still does a creditable job. It is slow but there are ways of compensating for it's negatives.

Great shots Max, sharp and great colours - I'm suprised they were shot with the Tamron.

I've been struggling to get decent surf shots with my Sigma 70-300 although I 've been practising like a madman, and very slowly improving, in the lead up to the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper later this month.

Great to see you back in the pipeline Max. Even if you think you're rusty, the shots are still great. Not keen on number three as there's no doubt a large group of people that like looking at male surfers' backsides but I'm not one of them. Just the kind of guy I am.

That's goofyfooters for you, they can't write correctly, can't even surf in the correct direction! :D :D

G'day Jonas:

The lens doesn't really matter, I use the cheapest one possible, if I get it splashed with salt water it isn't the end of the world. You have to remember to get as close as possible to the action. That may be a bit hard at the Pro events as the organisers don't like anyone who's not accredited or contracted but hey, it's a free ocean and a free beach.
Keep snapping at Snappers and post some of your shots!

Cheers,

Max

Hah! As a Goofy myself, I'll accept your well-founded criticism, Max!! This is why I no longer surf! (Not that I ever really could anyway)

Point taken Simon, actually I don't surf either. A real nice young bloke a few months ago offered to give me a few lessons in exchange for some photos, but I knocked him back. Two bad knees, courtesy earlier footy injuries and several untreated hernias made the decision easy for me! That's what happens when you pass 40 years of age! I still offered to give the him the photos in any case.

Cheers,
