Introducing Nam

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Introducing Nam

Pirostitch and I had a micromeet at Botanical gardens today, mainly with a purpose of doing a little model shoot. I wasn't very happy with this one compared to my previous shoot with Alisa, as Nam was quite tense and I made quite a few technical stuff ups (I needed you, Arthur!!), but I'm still learning quite a bit. I'm sure Wayne (Pirostitch) will post his soon. I'm posting a first few of mine below. Your critiques and suggestions are very welcome.

Well,

I'm sort of wondering what kind of photos you were trying to take ?
This sounds awfull, what I'm trying to say is, what is the motto of your shoot ?
What is it you are trying to capture ?
Have you communicated this to your model ?
Sorry for being of no clue what you were trying to do.

Number 5 for me...

Very natural in that shot and selective DOF really makes her jump out....

Loose the bracelets IMHO though.... to distracting...

I have to agree with Scott, #5 leaps out at you and is my pick as well. As you mentioned Nam really does seem tense and it comes across strongly in most the picks. A lot of the poses seem to be 'unnatural' which adds to the awkwards I sense in the shots. I haven't had a chance to shoot a model (just the wife.../ducks) so I can't offer an suggestions from experience, but I think a lot of it is building up a rapore with the model so she or he feels comfortable.

number 5 works for naturalness, the others appear as though the model just isn't relaxed at all.

Maybe on subsequent shoots she may become a little more comfortable with you or perhaps the surroundings and it will reflect in the images.

The last shot is, IMO, the best of the lot and looks as if Nam had really relaxed. The very slight OOF suits this pic very much :)

Thanks for your comments and critique, guys. I like No. 5 also, all other ones look unnatural.

Christian - I get what you are saying. I was not quite sure what I was going after in terms of the end result. I wanted a sort of casual look. I guess I need to plan my shoots more and communicate more with the models.

I'm with Chris, I think #6 is the standout, although #5 is good too. Next time take some champagne for Nam to have inbetween shots (photographic shots that is - not shots of champagne hehehe). :D

Hi Alex,

#5 is best of the bunch. you may want to use ps to remove the blood shot eyes. #6 could be better if you crop out her shoulder on the left.
