Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Welcome to the forum!

What a great image! I like the way you did not isolate the seagull but put it in context of other birds, yet isolated it by selective colouring. Well done.

good first post.

I like how all the seagulls seem suspended in mid air.

I would be tempted to clone the larger OOF one out of the foreground on the Lhs though.

Great shot .But the colour on the chip makes it look like the chip has been added in later . To my eye anyways .

Fantastic shot!

If you're feeling artistic I'd like to see what the image would like like with the bird catching the chip also in colour (leaving the rest how they are)

Might look crap but I'd like to see it anyway :)

Really interesting and very artfully presented. I'd agree about it being stronger with the OOF seagull removed.

Indeed I did! :D
And you (and other lurking OCAUers) will probably see some more familiar stuff as I unleash my pics on the poor unsuspecting folks in this forum! :D

I did tinker with that idea when I was first processing the shot, but since gulls are mostly b&w anyway (well, apart from beak and feet) I just ended up converting the whole image to b&w, bar the chip.
I've had a few comments about the chip looking fake or like it has been photo-shopped in, but it's real. It took me a whole damn bag full of chips to get that shot! :D

Excellent, well executed and tastefully done... Congrats on such a terrific first post!

Agree with cloning out the OOF bird on the lhs, it takes me away from your key subject...

Thanks for the comments so far.
I have cloned out the offending animal in question.
Poor bird... never knew what hit him... :D

Yup. It looks unbalanced and a little "empty" now.
I might go back to the original and do a tighter crop - will see how that works out.

Cheers!

another cheating thing you might try could be to clone a bird or two from another frame into the void.

cool, that's one stunning image, even the chip looks out of place, it's visually humorous and graphic

I like the second shot with the large OOF bird gone. The openess and asemmitry is exceptional. You turned a quite good shot into a real winner. Do Not fill that newly opened space. One of the best shots of this type I've seen in a very long time.

Welcome to posting pics on forum! I posted my first one yesterday as well and its great to get critique back. Your seagulls shot is fantastic and I can appreciate how hard it is to get a good shot while birds are flying. Like many others, I prefer version no. 2 with the OOF gull removed. Must admit, I also thought the chip was added in.

Great first posting, Westcoast
