Took my new D70s to Geelong over Christmas to take photos of my new nephew. Had a bit of a play with the SB-800, and used mostly the 50mm/1.8 - I think one of these shots is with the 18-70 kit lens.
Some things I've learnt:
- Wow, the DOF is really, really shallow at f/1.8! I got a lot of shots where I'd focused on his nose, but his eyes are blurry, etc.
- I need to think a bit more carefully about my backgrounds when shooting portraits, for various reasons (composition, distractions, lighting etc)
- Remote flash is both cool and useful!
- Auto WB gets confused easily (as discussed in my beginners thread), but RAW is a godsend for fixing things.
- Babies find cameras and people holding them quite fascinating.
- Babies never do what you tell them to do.
- Babies only put up with a certain amount of camera flash before they turn into Captain Crankypants.
- I love that green suit.

Love the last two! Especially the last one... the little hand and the big thumb, is just a great emotional shot. Gorgeous!
As you found out, shallow DOF can be a curse when you come back to review your shots on the PC... on the LCD they might look sharp and infocus...

Craig, you are absolutely right about the preview LCD screen flattering the image  I thought I was an absolute genius until I got home and had them at 100% on my screen... A lot of them didn't look so crystal clear after that!!
