Motorplex Burnout Photos

A friend of mine races his car quite often (not his daily driver, he custom built the V8 himself, it redlines at 8000 odd, and runs high tens, not bad for a hobby car) ... so i went along for a visit and to try out using the 50mm F1.8 lens Im borrowing from a mate ... very stoked with this lens! I love being able to snap shots in low light, with no flash. (im going to order this lens, thiough i want a pre yr 2000 one when they were made in japan). Some shots still a little soft due to hand shake, and a little maybe due to being so wide open.

Yum, looks great Brad! Doing 10s isn't half shabby either, not on street rubber I presume? Car looks great and you've captured the atmosphere well, the smoke came out spot on!

not too sure what the rubber is , but i know that if you floor it on a normal road it just purree's the tyres, where as at motorplex is launches with minimal spin.

the thing is a handful, driving along at 80km/h, plant your foot, it will furiously spin both wheels (lock diff) to about 140odd. Crazy bit of power. he's just an enthusiast, with a smart head and knows engines inside out. (hand built it). Runs on avgas, the previous motor was nitrous powered, but the new one is naturally aspirated.

i would love to give it a drive, but i daresay it'd take a lot of getting used to before you could thump it, and not kill yourself

I also have this lens and love it, great value for money i think. BTW, you wouldnt happened to of seen a silver BMW M coupe there running 10's would you?

only thing i noticed with this F1.8 is quite a bit of chromatic aberration (forget the spelling)

Image number 3 is outstanding for its boke and colours. A little fill flash would have turned this into a masterpiece! What lens did you use?

yes i love that pic ... great feel to it.

I agree, flash fill may have helped, though i DO like the very dark and moody aspect to it.

Lens was a pre year 2000 Nikkor 50mm F1.8 ...

oops my Sony! You are in WA and he lives in Syd.......the tracks look nearly the same!

No, not stock at all........last time he ran it he got kicked off the track for going too fast (140mph), was told to come back when he had a chute etc.

haha my mate got told last night not to come back on a street machine night, only proper race nights.

and a couple weeks ago he was told not to come back without a rollcage. (hes got one now) ... must be a godo sign that the hard work on the engine is paying off.

I would SO love to have a drive of that thing ... but i daresay it would require a lot of taming before you could even think about flooring it and not wiping out. (in adrians car, if you just floor it, it turns into a handful very quickly)

The 50/1.8's a great bargain lens, have one of the later ones and only used it a couple of times but haven't noticed any particularly bad CA Maybe I just haven't been in the circumstances that bring it about...

Sweet VK there. I'll also join in the chorus re: the 50/1.8. It's a great lens... personally I don't find too many occasions to use it due to its 'neither here nor there' focal length (IMHO), but when it is used, it doesn't disappoint - and even better it's one of the cheapest of Nikkor glass!

Image DSC_2601 also shows off one of its advantages compared to the 50/1.4 - specular highlights are rounded, not heptagonal (that really bothered me about the 1.4).
