Frog-hunting with BlacknStormy

Postby Manta on Mon Nov 21, 2005 8:42 pm

Went out frog-hunting last night with BlacknStormy (Narelle), her partner Damian and another mate, Mike. I spent a lot of time with Narelle’s 105mm Micro on my camera. Thanks Narelle! I love this lens but I’ve got a lot to learn about DOF and general focussing when it comes to macro work!

All taken with the 105 – your comments are welcome.

Simon I think you did a great job in using the 105. Good sharpness and dof in #1. Probably helped with mistress blacknstormy with you. At the moment my lust for a macro is divided between the 105 and the 150 sigma both very sweet but i'd love the extra legs of the sigma.
By the way you did realise that the third shot is in fact a terrapin not a frog!
cheers

No wonder it didn't hop away like the rest of them!!! Thanks Marco - appreciate your comments. I'm sure you'll decide which lens is best for you.

Thanks BP - it was a pretty hastily organised sojourn but it was certainly a great learning experience. Narelle and Damian really know their stuff and are terrific guides for apprentices like me.

He certainly had an expression on his dial Chris. I'm waiting for Narelle to chime in and let me know what species he is. I know he's a native but not sure which one.

I was actively looking for them Darryl but we didn't come across any. Narelle found a sizeable python skin though and I'm now using it to keep my kids out of my study - Does wonders when draped across the floor in the doorway...

Hey Manta, Looks like y'all had fun!
Shot number 3 certainly wins the cuteness stakes :D but I think my favorite shot is the first one ... the DOF is spot on & its very crisp.

As for the marsh frog - well plonk clop plonk clop to you too! :D

Ha!
We had a great colony of striped marsh frogs living in our fish ponds at my old house. They used to clonk away all night (nearly drove mum nuts) . I remember collecting 19 of them in a bucket one day and taking them down to the local creek. Provided relief for 1 or 2 nights! :D

Mum and Dad have decided to go for a more "synthetic" water feature in their next house

Fantastic photos Simon - I'm going to have to give you my 105 I think!!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed our night out - especially the healthy dinner at KFC 8)

That common sedgefrog (Litoria fallax) is beautiful, and as for the turtle... classic shot. It is Chelodina longicollis (eastern long-necked turtle), often found in standing water ---- and as you commented, secretes a musky odour when disturbed. (and boy, did we disturb it!!!!).

Where is the shot of the damselfly? and of the dragonfly??????? :)

BigPix, I didn't forget about you, and I promise that we'll organise a 'minimeet in the wild' for you in the next few weeks. We had this night up and running pretty quick - but we'll be better organised for a proper minimeet. You guys will have to decide what you want to do? Birds, frogs? Boondall wetlands maybe? Or White Rock environmental park.....
have a think guys, and get back to me.

What do I have to do to score the 105?....... bribery comes to mind...... would love to join you and others for an evening of shooting and learning.........

Ps: Hope your nose is better.........

LOL BP - bribery???? I'll have to think about that :)

The nose is fine - I was just glad that he didn't bite me on the tongue when he flew into my mouth first ! These guys really really hurt - they are one of the few insects I'm very wary of (and assassin bugs)

This is one of the shots I was expecting Simon to post - we came across a couple of emerging dragonflies. This shot was taken after the wings had been inflated with haemolymph (insect blood) after it had emerged from its exuvia. At this stage, they are pretty transluscent, as they have not yet hardened their exoskeleton :)
