Hi All , well here is some very rushed shots as i was busy doing motoX and all of a sudden bang. So rush to my gear change lens get rid of flash, grab tripod and rush to the oval, ok realised i was too close as some were very big. I set manual focus to inf and about F8 30 sec and used my hat to cover lens and took away when i heard a bang, anyhow here is a few shots. Not good but yeh.

Andrew it was very rushed, i should have been ready and setup further away and 15 mins before it started, but was a mad dash and now i have to wait another year before we will see anymore.

I love the idea of using a hat and the 30s shutter for timing your shots... I've played with a few prosumer camera's with "fireworks" modes that are based on the light meter hitting a particular trigger point. I've been wondering how to do this with the D70 so I'll certainly give it a go at the next fireworks show

Even with the shots being rushed the results look good... The colour and shape of the last image looks great.

2nd shot looks most impressive, for rushed shots they look pretty damn good to me, wonder what a not so rushed job would produce :D

For rushed shots you did great BBJ, so where all of these 30sec exposures ?
I think my favourite is the last one, its a tad more simple and very "flower like" .. John what lens where you using ?

Thanks all, just got outa bed late nite and slept in, Graig i used the kit lens i just took the filter off.

Ok #2 is a 30sec shot couple of 5sec and a 20sec shot, but i was too close to the action so to speak as some bogger blast i missed but well they turned out ok it is something that i maybe could have done better i think if i planned it more but as we only have these once a year and these ones are better than the ones i took at out show here where i live.

Strange really because this was held 50 klms away a small town and they had a lot better fireworks than here.

I would love to get shots like this, i gather new years eve or something but yeh nothing happens here on that nite so yeh these are good pics as well, i think the longer the exposure the more trails you get so faster shutter to say like 5 secs or so will prolly eliminate some of this.
Like everything here they dont go long enough to really try get the best setting, all i can do is try a different ones each year.

Man, these a really great shots John! I've always wanted to try this. I didn't know you needed such a long exposure time. Do you set for 30sec coveriing the lens then uncover after the bang and cover again? :?

Yes Jase thats what i did, but also did some at like 5 secs and so on but instead of getting like 1 shot i held hat over lens as to get more than 1 Boom as to speak in the 1 frame, just a try and see how it goes.

Some nice pics in there John - the last one is my favorite. I think the trick to nailing a really good fireworks shot is to get something else into the shot for perspective. Lake, building, SH bridge, etc.

Still - I think yours are very nice. :)
