more Western Plain Zoo photos (400kB)

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Two weeks ago I was up north in Dubbo (for the judging of one of the national photography exhibitions) and ended up having Sunday free, so spent most of the day wandering around the zoo.
Hlops's images from the zoo prompted me to dig out some of my own to share with you.

I've always had a thing for Giraffe eyes!

(actually she [the giraffe] was only after the carrots)

The Blackbuck enclosure is apparently always stripped bare of grass, which makes for a tricky photographic background.


I found the American Bison a difficult subject, and settled on detail shots of the fur:

Not something you see very often (it was actually mid-drink, which is something you see even less often).

The Ring-tailed Lemurs were frolicking on the side of their island away from the cafe area, but around on their side the 100-400mm let me reach across the water...

All photos with EOS 20D or 10D with various lenses.

Nice photos, Dave! Was a day cloudy? Light seems to be soft. When we were there light was too contrast and harsh that I gave up to try to capture lemurs - having 80-400 lens I could easily reach them but either black or white part of it was blown :(

It varied. You can see on the Blackbuck shot that it was quite sunny, but yes at times it was very overcast, and as I left the rain started in earnest.

The first shot is fantastic - easily my fav.
Lots of captions (which I won't share!) popped into my head when I saw #2. It looks like a pretty young chap(ette)
All of the brown colours of #3 work well together - well caught
Although the fur (#4&5) looks good, as photos, the composition doesn't do as much for me as the others
I don't recall seeing a Koala's tongue before :)
What's with the eyes of the Lemur? :shock: Are they usually this wide open and brightly coloured? Is it posessed? Or has someone tossed it some substance!?! :lol:
I've enjoyed these shots (am looking forward to going ther myself early next year - haven't been before but keep seeing great photos and hearing good things about it)
