Adam, maybe get the kit lens as it is such a bargain when bought as a package, and maybe a s/h 70-210 4-5.6. It is light and reasonably good quality.

Adam, for the money the 18-70 is too good to go past. The next lens is a bit harder

 Here's my travel kit:

            - 17-40 for wide angle - 70-200 for zoom - 50 fast prime 3x lenses. It is a little heavy as the 70-200 is the 2.8; but a lighter one (say around F4) would drop in weight considerably. I find I never really miss the 40-70 range. So maybe you could get your wide angle and say a 50-200 zoom or something (I think Nikon makes one like that?). Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes. http://www.dionm.net/
