Morning all...happy father's day for those that it applies to

anyway...I can't find my konica flash that I used to use with my G5 (it's a super old one that I have no idea where I put).

So now I'm thinking of buying a new flash for the D40x and...well I'm tossing up between the SB-400 and 600 in terms of useability and value.

What features make the 600 (or even 800 for that matter) worth the extra bucks and what would you recommend for a DSLR newbie.

Depends on what you are shooting. What range you need, fill flash, people shots, macro, battery life, etc, etc.

You really need either of the Nikon digital optimized as you mentioned Speedlights to suit your Nikon DSLR to get full compatibility.

The 600 is a BIG step jump from the 400. You can bounce at any position, not only in landscape orientation as the 400 can only do. Results are much much different, and 600 has much better in this type.

You also have control in bit more over in the 600. Later on, when you upgrade from the D40x, you will still have the 600 to use. And then if you ever decide to chuck in the 800 into your bag, you already got a 2 light wireless setup. The 400 cannot do wireless flash.

The only tradeoff is price and the size/weight you have to carry with you. Also, the 600/800 also have a much steeper learning curve. Be prepared for the challenges ahead.

I have an SB-400 and sometimes i regret not adding that extra 100-200 for the sb-600 !
HOWEVER... when i'm carrying it to a dinner, i'm glad i purchased the sb-400
Got mine new for $185 so cant really argue with that.

yeah it's really a double edged sword...I think the sb400 would fit my needs now as a complete novice with DSLRs (although I have used ext flash with the G5) but in the future...hmm who knows.

I also like the small size of the 400 as the big cam/lens/flash combo can scare some shy subjects.

Ahh decisions decisions...I am leaning towards the 600 though ...damn you Yi-P!

You will end up thanking me later on after a few months of owning your 600

Then after a year or so, you regretted why not have gotten the 800

That's probably the most importnt point to consider here. How many times do you want to make this decision?

And how many times do you want to pay for this item?
