Hoya close-up filters - these were taken with just the 2x one on - cost $38, and while it's no macro lens, it's not bad in the meantime

I love the colours of the blue and yellow one. Stunning visually and excellent composition. I would love to see more..

Hope I'm not intruding... I took some pics at the fourm meet with the Canon 500D close up filter that some might be interested in seeing.

It was mounted to Birddog's Nikkor 70-200VR.

200mm, f/8 - 1/30s handheld at that focal length, it's a sure sign VR works!!

The first point of observation is that it caused the AF to be temperamental - manual focus is recommended (this is mentioned in the instruction manual). Secondly, depth of field is extremely shallow with a close up filter. You'd want to stop the lens down - but that brings with it the shutter speed issue.

Thanks for the two links to the Hoya filters...I am going to check them out and grab one. Should I just get one and use a step up/down ring? I would say I would probably only use this on the kit lens (maybe the 50mm 1.8???)

You can buy the stepup/ down ring to use on one filter, but what filter? CP? or ND etc....

Hi Birddog

Sorry for the "confusing" post. My notebook crashed this morning and I had to format it and re-install Windows, so I was re-installing programs at the same time as reading the forum.

I am looking at getting a "close-up" filter (like what sheepie has used) and I also may look at a circular polarizer and neutral density filter also.

At the moment, I have three lenses (I will have the 70-200 f2.8 VR in a few weeks), so I am wondering, should I get just one of each filter, and use the step up/down ring, or should I get each lens its own filters? I have never used/purchased and filters before, so I am just "guessing" as to what I should get.

I have also excluded the possiblity of getting a tele-converter at the present time - I am running out of money!

Get the 77mm filter (CP or ND Or closeup) and buy the stepdown ring.

It's very confusing when order stepup/ down ring cos the in & external thread on the lens(es).

I have three lenses, all with different filter sizes.

And I have an IR filter that I used on the G3 - the filter size is different than all three lenses. Just great.

So I was in Ted's at Chadstone availing myself of ten free digital prints that my wife took on the G3, and I told the girl there I was after a step-up ring, 52mm lens filter size to 58mm filter.

Certainly, she said, turned around and just stopped. Stood there for maybe 20 seconds, apparently realising that she had no idea what I was talking about, until the guy serving someone else leaned over to her and said, we don't have step up rings.

On the smiling and wanting to help front I give her top points. Not so much on knowledge.

I might visit Vanbars tomorrow.

I'm not surprised with what you have said,
Most of the stores now not well equiped with knowledgeable staff, cos Skill trained staff are too expensive for them to hire and mainly they deal with P&S camera.
Go to Vanbar, more helpful staffs there and they know what they're talking about same as understanding our questions.

That is so sad.

Not just her complete lack of knowledge, but also that a so-called specialist photgraphy shop doesn't sell step-up rings.

Was this the Elizabeth St store? If so, it obviously wan't the pro shop, but even so ....

It was actually at Chadstone - still a fair sized store, but I would imagine that the Elizabeth street store would know more, even in the ground floor part.
