Organised a last minute shoot with one of my workmates who's just finished restoring this car...









I'm hoping to do some close up detail shots with it next week.

I'm pretty limited for locations in my home town. I think this old garage worked well with the car.

Great work with everything on these especially the lighting. One minor nit pick with #2 is the sign on the garage door which slightly distracts from the overall image.

Now that you have the basic technique down pat, why don't you integrate the owner into the pictures? Sort of like an environmental portrait where you can get the owners personality to complement the car etc.

I'd also like to know the specs of the 'new' car... Clarkson asked...

Lightpainting a person could prove difficult. They'd have to stay very still.

I don't suggest you paint them in the traditional sense.

#1 for me. Being an old car nut myself i can appreciate the quality of the car and shot. The car and setting go hand in glove. Fantastic work.

I agree - I couldn't imagine which rims would be more appropriate, but these don't seem to match the classic restoration.

It is a beautiful car and the restoration appears immaculate.

I always thought the 55 was the more elegant of the three from 55-57. The 57 is the more flambouyant, ostentatious car with the rocket launchers on the bonnet.

Restoration might not be the correct word. I don't think the intent was to rebuild it to original condition. He just wanted to rebuild it.

It's getting supercharged soon and the it's got disc brakes from a Commodore on it currently, so I don't think it was meant to be a restoration to showroom condition.

Not taking away from the job done - it looks awesome and you have photographed it really well.

I forgot to mention that I think that the red brakelights are a great touch. Illuminating headlights also would give more life into the car.

Do you use a pre-determined plan for the sweeps with the softbox? Do you have any that accentuate the top shoulder of the car only... (side view).more a mysterious one with the wheels not so prominent?

Sort of I guess. I know how I want the photo to look so I know what I need to light up. Sometimes it's a matter of evaluating the shot and seeing what areas need more/less light. I'm pretty good at getting it sorted first go these days. Darker colours can take a few more attempts to get right.

I don't have any with just the edge highlighted. I'll give it a try next time.

Headlights don't work so well with the longer shutter speeds. I guess I could expose just for them and layer it in, but I kind of pride myself on getting the job done in one frame and as right as I possibly can in camera. Obviously the transparent bonnet shots are the exception to that rule. I'll give it a try though and see what it looks like.

Sorry Adam, I'll grab a towel for the drool I left on the Chevy... that's an awesome shot! Extremely well executed and definitely in my book of inspiration!
