Craig, in the B&W shot, I used a filter which allowed me to choose a paper effect, and I chose a "very soft" paper, which results in a, you guessed it, very soft image. I probably could have gone for the "soft" effect, but thought this effect suited the image.
Looking at it again, I think it may be a little too soft. I can change that and probably will.
The shot was taken with Alex in the cot, head on his side, with the SB800 diffused through white blankets effective at Alex's belly, hence the dramatic light fall off. Unfortunately, the original shot had the blankets exposed a lot more than Alex's face.

You will never stop photographing your child! By the time he reaches his 21st birthday you will have over 5000 photographs of him. This is what cameras were made for. Congratulations and keep the images coming....we love them!

Thanks Matt. 5000 over 21 years is only about 240 pa - I think we will easily meet your forecast of
over 5,000.
I just wonder what kind of camera we will be using at his 21st? Bronica ETRS, Rollei TLR or Hasselblad HD24 (perhaps, by then, Nikon may come out with a DSLR that takes high ISO shots with minimal noise?).

On the contrary, I like both images, Patrick. I guess the foot of the baby was covered in talcum powder? The first picture is soft, but it adds tenderness and enhances the fragility of the subject; while the second is a contrast of scales and skins. You are getting me ideas for in a couple of weeks I am off to Spain where I will meet my new born nephew. I am hopping I can take pictures of him half as good as yours.
