Really nice photos mudder in particular the great shot of the lion - yawning?
If you used the SB800 on the bird shots then I think you have got it, by god you have got it

Yeah Mudder it looks like you've well and truly got that fill flash working! Great shots. The last one is definitely my favourite. Those birds you took near the pelicans are Rufous (Nankeen) Night Herons. The one with spots and streaks is a juvenile.

mudder,
Great shots, I am with Chris - the yawning lion.
So what problem are you having with the SB-800 when taking shots in the bird aviary . Shots look mighty dam fine to me, unless I am a poor judge.
Cheers,
fozzie

G'day,
Just sippin a cuppa...
Thanks for the species info Nicole, I'm hopeless identifying the names of the species of 'em...
Fozzie, I seem to be constantly underexposing, I end up increasing the exposure on a fair few of the shots in PP by up to .5EV Maybe I should try increasing either the exposure or flash value in the cam value a smidge... Also when using just TTL, when I increase the flash value it decreases the image to subject setting??? Dunno why, back to the manual I suppose
The lions crack me up, I just wait a while and one of 'em will end up yawning out of boredom I think...
Cheers,
Mudder

G'day Fozzie, I remember a while ago being at (I think the Melbourne Zoo) with a guide and we were chatting about one of the big cats (I think some type of leopard) when a pidgeon flew into the enclosure and before you could say anything, it dissapeared in a cloud of feathers, with a few of the feathers hanging out of the leopards mouth... The guide said, ahhh well, the big cat's just doin' what big cats do Cheap lunch I spose... xerubus wrote:...which glass were you using? they look sharp as a tac...
G'day Xerebus,
Was just about to head off to Heallesville sanctuary for a sticky nose... All the animal shots are taken with the Nikkor 80-400VR. I've been using spot focus as opposed to multi-segment focus, dunno if it helps or not...
Cheers,
Mudder

Great shots Mudder. We wiil have to go to the Zoo together sometime so I can learn from your technique. BTW the 2 herons together are White Faced Herons, and the juvenile Nankeen Night Herons are very similar to to Brown Bitterns.

Mudder, you're certainly maximising your value from the Melb Zoo membership.
Great set of captures there.

You bet, can't help it... I save on entry and spend $12 on snaggers at a barby there... Was fangin' for a feed, got a few strange looks with 2 snaggers in each hand... I just got back from Healesville Sanctuary too! Piccies to come in a thread in a tick, in between overs in the cricket.
Cheers,
Mudder
