Well bought a new charger (old one died) so the flash is up and running again.

Had another play with water shots.

They're all great, but I think the contrast and colours in No 3 is outstanding. Well done.

Pippin, any chance you can post a photo of your setup, I've always wondered how to get the low angle with these types of shots.

Artists impression:
Image

A = Chair
B = Plank
C = Cup with hole in bottom (pin hole)
D = Camera
E = Container (full to brim) - surface tension (if container is level) can keep the water over the actual container edge
F = bigger container to catch overflow

Flash generally from the side.
In the ones where the water is whiteish (eg #3), the flash was fired into the side of the water rather than above the water level.

Took all of 5mins to put together (masking tape is the secret)

Thanks for the comments.
Still have trouble really nailing the focus.

regardign the focus wouldnt you just manually focus on a reference card placed exactly in line where the drop hits

The artist's impression suggests you are using a medium format with a waist level finder :lol: By the dimensions, I would say Mamiya RB67? Just kidding.

There's something about that third one... all the little droplets are just in exactly the right place! :D Love the deep blue colour as well.

Hrmh, with holidays approaching and some really carp weather in Adelaide, reckon I might give these another stab myself.

The low angle is quite cool with the tiny little droplets :)

That's what I do, but drops don't fall exactly. They also splash in different directions and angles.

There is also a tendency for the drop base to move on the bottom of the cup a little as water builds up - capillary action and all that.

These shots were all F16, so don't know that I'm going be able to better the DOF.

you have managed to capture some very good splashes here
but as they stand I find the background very distracting
I calibrated my monitor about 30mins ago and there are a lot of dark smudges showing on the background, at first looking at the thumbnails I thought they were shadows from the flash, but looking at the larger versions they now look like actual splashes on the blue card you were using as the backdrop if this is the case you should either move the card further back so it doesn't get splashed or wet it completely before you start so that you end up with a constant background

Thanks guys.

firsty: I'm aware of this problem. Setup MKII will have a much larger background separation (as well as ability to swap colours easily) to get rid of the splash issue.
