Im very new to digital SLR's..
Heres a few shots i took yesterday of my car.

I absolutely love the first shot

Any advice/hints/tips or things to try from those more experienced on how to make my shots better??
would be great

Im using a canon 400D with 17-85mm IS USM lens

I cheat by using the landscape setting when taking pics of my car as i
like the way it saturates the blue

Not too confident with full manual shots yet.
Also it was about 40 degrees and it was too hot to be
taking too many shots messing around with settings

Welcome Travy, nice car and nice shots. In terms of composition maybe try being a bit further from the background with a large aperture for shallow depth of field, should make the car the absolute focal point. Nice.

We have a limit of 4 images per post with 800 pixels in the longest direction to keep it fair for people on dial up, etc. Full details in the FAQ, these were 1000 pixels which means most have to scroll to even read your writing (which is probably why so few comments).

I do agree with the late arvo/early evening time.
its not as harsh as the early arvo sun.

I took a few yesterday with another mates car,
worst part about open places is the background..
(cars in the distance in this shot.. )
I guess thats why i normally keep it in close to a backdrop.

yummmm......STi...i want one ><.......hmm i guess those cars in the bg could have been cloned out. i like the first shot.

I would have taken a little more of a frontal angle on the newest shot Trav! It would have helped to keep the cars out of the background. I still think the wagon looked better

oh if i had money ...but i do have a 400D also and a turbo...just not a wrx

I like the seperation you get with the ground on the first one, low angle of view, and you get daylight underneath.

Agree with the earlier comment, regarding distance to backdrop, however, your choice of backdop is SUPERB! Nice, simple, appropriate, well done.

Afternoon sun, if you can get it at that locaiton, would work some magic on the panels on the side of the car, and light underneath better, show off the wheels and the STI brembo brakes, and cross drilled discs.

Nice wheels too.

I feel the car's a little oversaturated for my liking.

Ditto to the wheels, modena's are awesome, want some for my xr6t

Brett took a fair few shots in that location with the other car.
shadows of the trees and bright sun was a pain.

Oz beachside... unfortunately the building is on the wrong angle for arvo sun.. morning sun maybe, but not arvo.

Yep that is more along the lines of what I meant. To me there is a bit more separation between the cars which is good. The background works better from this angle too

your model rex has some good body contours. I would try it out with the largest light source possible, the cloudy bright sky, in a wide open space, where (depending on focal length and distance to subject) the reflections are simply the sky, and the horizon (you can create a horizon our of a 10m length of fabric too )

This would applify the fine paint work subi get off the gun.

No salt lakes nearby, Its mostly the bush (gum trees etc)

not too many flat open spaces either unfortunately.

Will have to have a look whats around a bit further out of town.

No, park the car on the concrete/grass.

The fabric creates a "horizon" along the side your your car. Say you had a large carpark, in a local park, and the backdrop is perfect, but behind camera there are posts, bins, other cars etc, you can black them out, using a "curtain".

Set up 4-6 light stands (or clip to the back of fold up chairs, or what ever), get some black fabric, say 120cm wide, by a few meters (4-6 meters, costs about $3/m). Hang the fabric off the back of the chairs like a "studio backdrop", behind camera position. When you take a pic of the front guard, looking down the line of the car, you see a straight line as the horizon, rather than all the cars in the car park, and bins, and crap...

Yeah the first is my fave too.
I bought a cheap little mini tripod used it for that shot then the battery went flat on the camera i was goin to get some from the front on same angle.

*reminder to self* by a spare battery
