No PS in this photo.

This occured at sunset in the Kimberley, sun was setting directly behind me, I have no idea what causes this...any ideas?

Was one of the most amazing sites I have ever witnessed!

Amazing capture.
Some possibilites. I have no idea if any of them are what is happening.
1. There are "rolling" clouds that form in the gulf and travel a long way. Perhaps these are them
2. Dust in the upper air. clear below it. Light from the setting sun travels through the clear layer & reflects off the clouds in the west. It then travels back through the dusty layer.
3. Shadows from the sun behind being funneled somehow so they taper as they get further away
I think #2 is the most likely of these, but it is still just a guess.

<a href="http://www.newscientist.com/lastword.ns"target="_blank" > New Scientist</a> has a question page read by scientists world wide. One of them may submit a definitve answer if you submit it there.

G'Day Greg,

Thanks for your reply.

Yep I think it was number 2, although I am just guessing. It only lasted maybe 5 minutes at best, increasing in intensity then just suddenly went. Dont think it was a sunset "reflection"as there were no clouds on the opposite horizon to cast a shadow.

Regardless, it was a peak moment, glad I managed to capture it. Thats what photography is all about in my book!

Lovely colours Escapism.
I have seen similar up in the Blue Mountains. More orange than yours though.

Sweet. An awesome shot. I am guessing but i'd say that is shadows from clouds and dusty or humid sky, depending on the time of year.

Either way it makes for a dramatic sunset.
