Some digital cameras, the D70 included, tend to oversaturate reds. Your roses look a little oversaturated on my monitor. It took me awhile to figure out that I needed to underexpose deep red subjects by about a stop to prevent them from 'blocking up'. You might like to retry the shots and underexpose a little. Then pump up the brightness in Photoshop.

My thoughts would be to go with the unflashed version and work the Levels and Curves adjustment layers somewhat and maybe just a tad of adjustment in Hue & Saturation then if needed. Good potential here though.

Yes, the red channel seems to be 'clipped' up on the overexposed side.
If you shot RAW and have NC, you can drag the red 'chroma' down by one or two stops and it may save you from this disaster.
It is a nice picture, but only need some tuning to get it shining!!

Like MattK says, the reds are overdone. the D200 has the same problem. I've been trying to get a decent photo of some of my cherry crop, and found that underexposing is the only way to get close to real colour, but even then I cant seem to get it quite right... the redder cherries look almost luminous, although the darker coloured ones are more realistic.
