Taken a little while ago with the afternoon sun through the window. Too dark as you look at Fred's left side of his face? I didn't think it was TOO dark..

I like this one a lot Geoff. Catchlights in the eyes are great, B&W is suitably moody. The dark side of the face doesn't bother me too much - this isn't a glamour shot, it's a strong character portrait.
Only thing I don't like is the zipper - for me, the good old thumb-over-image test shows improvement with it gone

Much better shot Mate,
I would crop the top down, to just above his ear.
You caught the eyes really well.

Really like it Geoff, I found it to be a very honest shot and I dig the "uneven" lighting, you've struck a nice balance between light and dark.

Did you do any PP Geoff? His eyes seem to be freakishly sharpened than the rest of his face hence the scary look.
I prefer the natural lighting than the shot with flash you posted previously. If you want to even out the lighting a bit, maybe get him to hold a piece of white card on his right side.

this lighting works well for the subject,
natural light is usually nicer than flash.
could try using a reflector on the other side of the face to even the light up if you wished

I like it Geoff but agree with Rooboy regarding the zip. (Yes, I used my thumb as well!)
There's a touch of Steve McQueen around Fred's eyes..
