they look flat to me - how to rectify?

Also compostion on these - do you think all the rod needs to be shown?

For me, I think I would have tried to frame the shot with the fisherman a bit further to the right so that the rod draws you to the centre.
Yes, I like to see all of the rod.
Alternatively, a *very* tight crop of the fisherman and the lower part of the rod may work providing the focal point was the fisherman's face.
My thoughts...........

flat? maybe PP a bit more contrast in with curves of levels
composition? Keep all the rod. I'd crop just to right of fisherman on the right hand edge of that central island, that would put the rod on the diagonal. By sliding the image off the right hand side of the screen to simulate the crop, it seemed to make the waves look bigger as well.

out of the two it's the b+w one for me. The character really stands out in that example.

its a nice shot.. but its lacking contrast.. a lil.. and with the fisherman.. he needs to be a bit more to the right of the frame.. so it has him looking out into the seas.... he's just a lil bit too centrally located

There seems to be a lot of artifacts around the rod? Is that an extreme crop from the original?

I would prefer a tight crop around the man, maybe leave some room to his left for the rod, but too much sea and waves can be distraction IMO

I'll have a go at recropping but it willl suffer with artifacts.

I havent done any curves or levels

I actually liked the storm surf more than the guy - not something I see that often here in metro SA but obviously quite common elsewhere on the East coast.
