I've been taking a few more images of my forever willing bro in law and this is one that I wanted to put up here for a stringent critique..i.e rip it apart of u must! This was taken with the 17-55DX 2.8 with the SB-800 in remote mode. I had a very light blue piece of paper over the flash to create a pre-pp cooler feeling. It has lost a bit of punch with the resize for web. Be keen on your thoughts on this one. If I were self critiquing I'd say that the shadow of the hat is a little distracting and the height of Fred's jumper does lose his neck somewhat. Apart from that I found it quite a pensive shot, and I just love photographing him. Appreciate your comments, good or bad

I would be moving him further from the background , that will take care of the shadow.

I think also a little less flash maybe.

Probably should have used a higher shutter speed and maybe bounce the flash off that back wall - and make him sit maybe perpendicular to the wall.

Noticed in your exif that you had the shutter speed at 1/60, which might be why the shot wasn't too sharp.

Creating a cooler cast photo can be adjusted later on if you shot with Raw.

what about using the 70-200VR @ 70mm ?
I think his shnozzel looks a bit large ?
Also I'd suggest desaturating BUT keep the blue eyes and sharpen them a bit more.

Piro - I was shooting in AP and wanted to get a minimal DOF (no OOF background) - yes not hard with a plain background - will investigate more with a higher shutterspeed next time he's here...

This wasn't too posed so setting him up physically beforehand didn't really come to mind - he just sits there and I kinda work around him/with him.
