Taken at the Queensland Taekwondo Championships today. The light was very ordinary with around 400 ISO using a 70-200 VR lens and SB800 flash.

It's a good shot, very sharp and a sense of movement, however I would have gone a shallower depth of field as it does look cluttered.

Did you use a long zoom to take this as the perspective is flat

The player in red has just been kicked by the player in blue. After the blue player kicked, he was punched in the chest by the red player and was photographed on his way to the ground.

In this exchange both players scored 1 point for their respective attacks.

A very quick overview, Taekwondo is a Korean martial art which is a full medal sport at the Olympics. 2 players compete against each other in a 8mx8m court with a view to scoring the greater number of points possible to win the match.

Competition is full contact with kicks allowed to the head & body but no punching to the head. Head kicks score 3 points, body kicks and punches score 1 point. There is no attacking allowed below the waist. For a point to be scored there are 4 corner judges 3 of whom must score points electronically at the same time for it to count in the players total. The matches go normally for 3x3 minute rounds with 30 seconds in between.

It was almost simultaneous, the kick was first and the punch was the counter attack.

It would have been nice to capture it, but the D70 just isn't fast enough. That's why I'm seriously considering a move to the D2Xs. The 8fps will capute more action.

These guys are lightning fast and the D70 just can't cut it.

if martial arts are done well, professionally, the human eye cannot follow it unless you are a professional yourself and even then the eye is to slow.

Any camera would not have a chance

I've been teaching Taekwondo for over 20 years, so I'm fairly confident as to when the exchanges will take place. I just need a camera with a fast enough rate to capture the action. Hopefully 8fps will cut it. But I've considered hiring one before buying a D2X.

Thanks for that, I don't wish to appear arrogant in my last post, it's just that it is frustrating knowing when the action is to happen and you capture just before or just after, because 3fps for this is just too slow.

FYI, I know people who punch 14 punches per second, I do about 5-6, sometimes 7.
I'd really love to see good images re martial arts and hope to see more from you.

I agree that a more shallow depth of field would have given impact to the photo. If someone can do 14 punches a second then the D2Hs or D2x will capture 8 of them in a second.
