Here's an image that I took during a visit to Circular Quay on the Queen's Birthday.

At first, I wasn't sure about it... Obviously it would have been a whole lot better if I'd managed to capture the whole bubble, but I only had a couple of seconds to take the shot...

However, every time I saw the shot appear on my screen, something appealed to me, so I decided to make something of it... What do people think?



I like the idea that somewhere she has a shot of me taking a shot of her - I don't think she noticed me at the time, she was focussing on the bubble...

i like the idea, the composition, and the b&w treatment. got to be happy with that shot.

John, whilst I haven't seen the colour version I think the B&W treatment works really well. As you've said it would've been ideal to have the whole bubble in view, but it's not an ideal world is it? I like it!

I'd be interested to learn how the bubble was being made...

How did that bubble came up??? At circular quay? I see no bubble machines

There was a guy there "performing" with the bubbles... He had a sort of lasso rope contraption on 2 sticks which he dipped into a paddling pool full of soap solution.... He could get bubbles up to 2 metres wide with it...

I had to stay well clear as every time such a bubble bursts the soap splatters everywhere... Didn't want to get it on my lens...

When I was a kid I had a bubble maker like the one you are describing - hours of fun was had off my parents balcony making big bubbles with friends

Can you give me an idea of the texture of the loop - was it like pipe cleaner furry?

Gerard - a lot thicker but kinda like candle wick material if that makes sense.

I *think* I got mine at the Sydney Royal Easter Show...

I also think that toy shops may have them.

Short tinsel wrapped tightly round fencing wire or a coat hanger works well, anything that the liquid will cling to.

Then add glycerine to the soap mix to increase the density of the liquid.

I have a collection of battery powered bubble guns they are great to get kids to smile and be attentive when doing shoots.

Why did you not talk to the other photographer and set up a better shot?

She obviously had you in her frame too
