I found this manhole cover with a cross cut out.
Not sure if it was a gate to heaven as it was leading down into a drain.
Couldnt decide on the colour or mono version.
I am prefering the mono, but love the colour of the rust.
Any preferences...?

The BW do more for the post title "gate to heaven"
Looks like the cross fell through it... like the one in cartoons... will be superb if that was in form of a little guy

Great photo. It really disappoints me that I would walk right past something like this and others such as yourself see a great opportunity. I really must look harder.

Marty - as already mentioned above, to actually see this and decide that it'd make a good photo/image is great. I prefer the colour version with the rust - seems more weathered and intense. THis is a little out of the ordinary from your usual kind of posts - I like it a lot.

This is a great image, well composed. B & W by a mile for me. It's more stark and draws the eye more strongly to the cross.

Good one Marty,
the colour one for me, the rust colour really makes it in my book.

Thanks guys,
looks like the colour is winning so far.
And Sir-T, just keep looking everywhere you go.
I am always looking for subjects to shoot, thats why I appear to be day-dreaming 50% of the time, and on the other 50% I probably am day-dreaming.
There are photo opportunities everywhere, you just have to look.

It's a tough pick between the 2 but I think the black and white just sneaks in for impact and more focus on the cross. I'd have prefered a little more DOF or for the focus to be shifted a little more forward (just a tad).
I couldn't view Exif Data, what settings did you shoot at ?

The colour one apeals more to me.
And I agree it needs to be more in focus at the front.

Cheers Steve,
the reason I prefer the b/w version is that the colour version lacks saturation across the image, which is not a problem in the b/w.
I do have a better colour version, much deeper colour in the original shot but the angle isnt quite right for me.
I could always go back and shoot again....

There both great marty. I do tend toward the colour in terms of visual impact, today anyway

I think a little more grungy and moodier and I may have been swayed by the B&W version.
You're photographic eye has been in overdrive here. Terrific capture

I do agree with others about DOF improvement in foreground
cheers

two great pictures. great detail around the main cross and then i really like the impression of a seemingly endless expanse of the smatter crosses towards the back of the picture.
IMO the b & w one fits the theme of heavens gate better than the rusty one. that said there is something very appealing about the rusty one as well... just cant put my finger on exactly what it is about it.
