I've been meaning to do this for a while now, finally got out at night on Saturday. I went to the Awabakal reserve at the Trig station. It was pretty clear night, but the moon was out, so not as much stars are visible.


50mm f1.8, 20sec iso 1600

I wanted to have the trig in the photo a bit better and because of bushes around there, couldn' t really get far enough, so I put on the kit lens and got this one.


18-70mm f3.5, 20sec iso 1600

I think this one comes out much nicer, with the trig in focus. You can easily see the Southern Cross, even managed to get a plane flying by.

I processed the images through bibblepro and applied the Noise Ninja element on it, it cleaned it up nicely. I'll have to go back and take a photo on New Moon.

The image with the trig in focus is the better one for sure. I would try NOT to get aircraft or satellites in these type of images as it really stands out.

From the brightness of the sky I gather there was a lot of light pollution. If you find somewhere that is darker you will actually get the true colours of the stars, rather than just the white light (I think this has something to do with the light being so stretched out it appears white, and if you have the shutter open it allows 30 seconds of light in, which gives colour).

Dark places are generally anywhere outisde the greater cities. If you go far enough out west (if your in NSW) then the night sky is inky black and the stars look extra bright.
