G'day all,

Called in at the zoo this morning, just for an hour or so in the cloudy, soft light, great for eye detail of animals with a heavy brow... Only took a few but thought I'd chuck up a couple as I haven't posted any animal stuff for a while, been getting into landscape more lately...

Anyway, as always, my favorites are any form of primate, I always feel as though we are not that removed, it's awesome watching and interacting with these guys... They were really playing up to the people this morning, banging the glass, and they seemed to recognise a keeper who was "talking" to one of the younger males at the glass, they really seemed to connect, was great watching it...

Not much PP, just levels, curves, a high-pass filter and re-size for web...

Andrew love the first you really captured the moment here. The expression and soulful eyes really make this image. Terrific You are very lucky living where you do, I just love primates and gorillas in particular. The closest thing I have to a gorilla up here would need one hell of a self portrait and I'm no Rockstar

First one is fantastic, second is also great but doesnt do it for me like the first.

How do you think they would have turned out if you had of used a flash? Would it of had any benfit with these photos?

As you have said, and most of us know that capturing the eyes is quite hard given thier big brows. Ive just bought a flash (as i think i told you the other week) and was thinking of heading out to the zoo tomorrow and trying out a few things.

Great shots, however I'm guessing that the first one might end up in the L.D.S. thread sooner or later

I've used flash on days with bright light to lighten the shadow areas on the face etc. and it works well under those conditions when the shadows are just too dark... I tend to back-off a little on the EV though (maybe -1 to 1.5?) as flash can look umm, like flash was used

This morning's light was great, soft and diffused, almost no shadow at times so didn't need it today...

It'll be good once the new Orang exhibit is finished, sometime in May I think...

Perfect lighting. I tend to go to the zoo on dull but brightish days as you don't get those harsh shadows.

First shot is awesome mudder. If it were a person it would be a great portrait... but it's still a great portrait!

Apart from birds, great apes are my favourite animals by far (especially the 'gentle giants', gorillas).

These shots are just sublime and you have captured a mood extremely well. Sharp and lighting is superb.

I like these very, very much - you should be proud of them.
