Yu Yuan Gardens and Markets, Shanghai

I was in Shanghai in late November. These gardens / markets were very close to my hotel so I found myself there numerous times over the week I was there.

My next holiday is in May, so I'm looking to get myself prepared (it'll be my first one since joining dslrusers, so the 'stakes' will be higher). Hence, comments and criticism very welcome, as I find that I'm less 'controlled' when I'm on holiday, and will take photos of any new thing I see and then rush headlong into the next 'adventure'.


This is from within the paid part of the gardens. Some of the buildings have exquisite roof monuments (much more ornate than gargoyles), the nicest of which are on a building right next to the toilets.


Interesting walkway shape (there's even one that's kind of a wavy zig-zag that I totally failed to do justice to)



Just at the exit, you re-enter a world where everyone's trying to sell you something. I'm a skinny white guy with headphones and an overstuffed backpack. Do I look like the kind of guy who'd want to buy an antique cabinet from your so-called "friend"?



At night, the place is thankfully a little -just a little- less crowded. The central part features a nice open area with pond.

Hey dude, thought I'd give my opinion in a post.

Overall, nice pictures. Detailed comments are:

#1. I like this perspective. In retrospect, I think I actually like that there is a lady in the picture, as she looks rather forlorn / wistful.

#2. Nice colours (looks very orangy on my screen), however I think the shot could have been a little better framed if you took one step to the right and stooped down a little lower.

#3. I like. The bokeh isn't too distracting. The only thing is, do you have the bottom part of the chime (that you cropped)?

#4. Looks a tad over exposed on my monitor. In print, I think I had that same initial thought. I'll have to see it again...

he first of these is very nice. I like the contrast between the desaturated appearance of the foregound and the extra saturation in the background. That's nice.

The last one is overdone: overexposed.

It needs to be pulled back quite a bit, IMHO.

2 and 3 are the best, very appealing imagery
the rest are excellent too but i think in number 1 the idea is good, but i think you need to crop in closer so you get less wall and the framing holds just the circular archway and the view through it

I was there in 1998 and all i can remember was how cheap cigarettes were but how expensive red wine was

2 and 3 for me also.

with 2, I would probably crop the foreground step and perhaps clone the thingy at bottom right. perhaps being lower or moving slightly could have improved it.
