Pacific Baza with chick

Here is a shot of a Pacific Baza (Crested Hawk) with its chick. In order to get to nest, a nature photographer friend and myself erected a 22 metre (70+ feet) tower made from alloy tubing and held up with 18 ropes and stakes. A camouflaged hide was then built on top of the tower. After 3 days in the hide, I managed this shot.

Pic was taken in the Kerry Valley at the base of Lamington National Park, Qld

Great environmental shot Michael. 22M up in an alloy supported hide for 3 days? You're game!

Thanks kipper.

I should have mentioned that each alloy section was 2 metres long and triple reinforced along all lengths and corners. Still felt a bit hairy when the wind blew, though!

The shot justifies the effort taken Mike. Not too many of these images around!

Blimey, it's amazing what nature photogs will do for a great shot :)

I'm glad you got such a great shot too, after all that effort. I hope the adult isn't feeding the chick a stick :)

Macro - It helps when you are passionate about something - I certainly didn't do it for the money. An amazing experience which I won't forget.

Simon - Not many shots of parent and chick around, you are right. Usually too bloomin' high to photograph

Killakoala - Building tower was effort but sitting in hide, watching these glorious birds in action was a pleasure. Getting pics was a bonus. Also, mum was adding stick to nest, not feeding it to the little blighter!

Thanks for comments so far

Thanks guys.

Yes, patience does help with bird photography. Apart from getting some decent shots, when you spend ages waiting it gives you a chance to absorb some of the tranquility and beauty of nature. Can't beat it!
