Well, at least I'm honest.... but who'd expect pelicans, a pacific heron, great egret with fish and to top it all off, 3 jabiru in a large dam in Ipswich???????

I think that the Cisticola is the pick. Very nice.

need more reach for birding though.

The cistacola is about the range I usually get them also.
I am still smiling about the one I here posted the other day.
they can be ellusive especially around here.

Thanks for the positive comments everyone ..... I meant shitty as in not close enough/clear enough/ or just 'enough', if you know what I mean. It is amazing to have this amount of birdlife out here at the moment, you can tell we need some more rain very very soon !!!!

These were actually all taken with the 80-200 WITH the 1.7TC on tripod, and heavily cropped, so you can see they were way way out, and basically, I didn't have a hope. One day, I'll be able to afford a long range tele, but not for a long time I think .... but it is fun playing (if frustrating).

Oh well, can't hurt to have a go??? LOL

blacknstormy have to been out towards Nth Ippy dont turn toward Kholo go straight and you come to a bridge it has power lines running beside it that have eagles/hawks sitting on them quite frequently. I've tried and failed to get good pics.

The dam is out past Ripley - go through Ripley, and just keep going ... the road goes from bitumen to dirt, go around the corner (be careful, there are a lot of d**kheads out that way) and go over the rise ...... there is a large dam on the left (part of a reserve) that borders the gun club of all things. At the moment, there are a heap of pelicans, 3 jabiru, the pacific heron, heaps of stilts, swans and ducks.... not bad for Ippy

Avkomp - if you haven't got the legs on your 400, what hope do I have????? Can you use a TC with the 400?

the 400 gets you shots, just that you have to work harder and it has limitations ( without wishing to start up an old thread where we discussed the pros and cons of this)
Take my current cistacola for instance, it isnt a bad shot. but obtained by hiding in long grass for quite a while. I prefocussed also where I hoped one would go and continually checked light so in case of a QR target I could get a shot off. I mistakenly quoted 85 % of frame but was less. longer glass would have given me a bigger image in the frame or let me shoot from a more comfy position. Cistacolas are small and shy. if you were after bigger stuff less problems would be found.

most of the pros or those with lots of money to spare get fast primes the order of 600mm and even stack TCs on them. regardless of what we have we will always wish for more.
Its all about the money really and the 80-400 produces decent images for the money.
I believe you can use TCs with it but need to look into it further. I fear that it will slow the lens down more so also but would live with that.
