Inspired by Matt (rokkstar) I discovered that my SB600 can be triggered off the camera (I thought it was only the SB800, that’s what you get when you have a look in the links section!! Thanks Leigh)
Anyhow I did a bit of mucking around and ended up with this shot. I was holding the flash unit in my hands and pointing it up my back. C and C more than welcome. (I have a thick skin)



Looking at it now I realise that it is soft around the eyes, bummer.

Mal, that's half the lighting for the scene you nailed - the rim lighting as can be seen on your visible shoulders' edge.

I'm intriqued that there appears to be catchlights in your eyes - yet you apparently didn't have a front firing flash?!

That is the onboard flash.

I agree with gecko. It may have been improved if you slightly whitened the whites of the eyes just a tad....but strong image.

Very dramatic and a great opening shot of your off the camera flash experiement, I'm keen to see more. If you can rope someone in to help out, I found it challenging to arrange the flash, compose the shot and pose and trigger the shutter all by myself, if you have an off sider the is a little less to think about.

i like the pose and backlighting but i think to make this image more impactful you need a second point light on the side to light up your features

study the lighting setup from these photographer at DLM you can learn a lot from just looking at the images:

Interesting pose and strong conceptually, but I think the lighting needs work.

I did find it a little too dark though and I hope that you don't mind Mal, but I had a little play with it in PS...

Played a little with the shadows & highlights and very roughly whitened up the whites of your eyes using the dodge tool... Let me know if you don't like it and I'll remove at once...

I like your changes John (on my laptop Mal's version looked fine) when I got to work it looks a little darker and flater.

I really like the pose and crop as you have to wonder what the rest of his body is doing.. something I think he's on the Rings appartus for Men's Gymnastics..

John thankyou so much for doing this. I like what you have done with the eyes. When I took this last night I was using my laptop but at work today I can really see the difference that you have made to it. THANKS

I think to achieve these sort of shots I need to be behind the camera when I take the shot Rather than pressing the 6 second timer and jumping into the shot

You should do it again with the full-res image and you should get a great result... just take more care around the eyes than I did

Mal, good shot mate and good onya for having ago which is more than i can say for myself, in the creative side of things. I like what john has done and i think this is a very good image, look forward to seeing more of this type of pics from you, and i think our Rockstar has inspired a lot of people here which is good, get the creative juices flowing.
