Here's another shot from my Brissy trip, again taken from the Goodwill bridge. What struck me was the contrast between symmetry in shapes and asymmetry in light. I'm still debating with myself whether this is crap or ok... I decided to just throw it to the hungry wolves

Steffen, I like it infact I have a shot under a bridge in Singapore (near the Merelion and Fullterton hotel that has a similar quality just different lighting). I think you've done well to compose very accurately, and the shadows mix it up too.

certainly not crap.

the hot bits on the right catch my eye though.
I would tone them down.

or even clone some of the less bright stuff over it.

Yeah, that puzzled me for a while. It turns out that most of the area that looks hot is not actually blown, esp not the white and magenta bits. I measured it with the eye-dropper, and there is only a small fringe where the red or blue (or both) channels reach 0xFF. This can also be seen in a screenshot from the RAW converter I used, highlighting the blown bits:



I'm going to have another look when I'm back home at my calibrated CRT...

Steffen. This is a great capture, especially given the light levels that you had to deal with. I really like the shapes of the bridge understructure and your care in framing them to emphasise the symmetry makes all the difference. Maybe slight crop on left & right would make the hot area less strking, but as it is this is an excellent image.

May I suggest to convert to high constrast mono - that will give it more oomph!

I agree, a mono version would be nice. But it's nice as is.

based on the brutality I inflicted on my honeyeater the other day, I reckon a few minute clone job would bring the bright stuff down to the same level as the rest of the image.

I think it is an excellent capture, the highlight is a bit bright but overall I love the structure/water and the other areas in the frame.

I am going to Brissy myself tomorrow but not to take great shots like this unfortunately
