Here's a shot I took of the Perth skyline in the early evening from the South Perth foreshore.

Nicely done - well exposed without too much flare on the bright lights and the lovely glassy water. Perth is my favourite capital city and you've done it proud.

Hi Stephen,
This photo was taken with a Canon 20D + EF 50mm f1.4 lens.

Exposure settings were:

Tv: 1 sec
Av: f2.8
Metering Mode: Evaluative Metering
ISO Speed: 100
White Balance Mode: Auto

Hope that helps, but really it's just a matter of trying out different exposure settings to get the effect you're after. When you say your night shots are failing, what is wrong with them?

Well, there's nothing really wrong with your shots.

The only tips I could give you are:

- Definitely take off the UV filter for night shots.

- don't crank up the ISO, otherwise the noise will ruin the image. Keep it at ISO 100 or 200.

- use a self timer and mirror lock-up to prevent camera shake or use a remote shutter release.

- use a *really* sturdy tripod

- if it's a really windy night and your camera isn't sheltered or bolted down inside a concrete bunker, forget it! Pretty much all of your pics will end up blurry due to camera shake because of the wind.

- play around with exposure settings - digital film is cheap! :D

Well done West Coast!

Q: What is that dot on the left. Was it a dead pixel?

Very beautiful.
Seems Perth changed much and I did not see so many tall building
there 10 years ago.

Luckily no, it's not a dead or "hot" pixel. That is either a star or perhaps Mars/Venus which can be quite bright in the evening skies here in Perth.
I'm sure the astronomy buffs in here might be able to help identify this thing! :D

which direction were you looking, and what time?
Its definitely not Venus though, its near the Sun in the morning sky

Westcoast, I've seen worse :D - nice shot!

I like the colour graduation in the sky from top to bottom, and the brightness from left to right, and of course the lights and reflections in the water. Well done!

Cheers

Well, this shot was taken waaay back last year 20/4/2005 at 6:24pm and I was facing north. I guess an astronomy program might be able to calculate what was in the night sky at that time?

OK, its Capella (alpha Aurigae) near the left edge, and beta Aurigae to its upper right, with pi Aur just below and to the right of it. You also have iota and kappa Ursa Majoris near the upper right corner, but they are barely recorded

Thanks Gordon! :D
Cool... they're stars... guess that makes the dots "hot" pixels after all! :D
