Hi all,

I wen't for a walk in the Tidbinbilla nature reserve today and said to my wife:

you know, on this windy and cool day, I wouldn't be surprised if snakes could be found on the footpath, soaking up sum warmth.
Well, guess what ?
This is whom we met:





and after we deceided to walk past the snake:

Doesn't that snake look like pure evil... not what I would want to encounter on a relaxing walk.

Hi Owen,

no evil at all, it was a very relaxed snake.
After WE RELAXED, we slowly walked past in 1 metre distance and then I put on the 70-200 and went back for a closer look wit the 70-200 and TC-17.

(the red belly black snake is not aggressive, don't frighten it and it won't do anything to you.)

That second image is beautifully sharp Christian... The red-bellied black snake moves like the wind, but usually away from you luckily...

I'm starting to agree that snakes aren't usually aggressive unless provoked. I've encountered one red bellied black when freshwater fishing ages ago, and two tiger snakes recently. On all occassions I haven't been chased or anything like that. All times I've been fairly close aswell.

Heck the idiots (one was my father) that I went freshwater fishing with decided to poke their fishing rods at it. I left in a hurry when they decided to do that

most snakes aren't agressive and will usually retreat from humans.
I have encountered only 2 that were agressive. one was a tiger and one was a western taipan. both unprovoked.

Havent seen many snakes this year, only 2 blacks and a brown and they took off at a rate of knots.

most biting incidents occur when people try to kill them or otherwise harrass. My friend trod on a death adder once and it attacked also, luckily he had thick boots on though.

Bet that wasn't deliberate!

Don't get me wrong, snakes are beautiful creatures, I just like a bit of distance or glass between us...

yep, you called it correctly. he didnt tread on the death adder on purpose!!

was bushwalking and it was in the leaf litter. obviously the snake wasnt happy about being trodden on.
But thats how those things hunt and only defended itself against a threat.

Obviously you have to be careful where you put your feet sometimes!
or moving wood etc where snakes may be. Commonsense must prevail.

the western taipan incident would have qualified for sure.
There was around half a dozen of us having a shower when the angry taipan came in.
Next minute naked men ran out from all directions. no cameras luckily.
Can look back and laugh now, didnt seem funny at the time though.

Nice shots... I can into a Red bellied black while out looking for birds to photgraph... I had the camera at the ready but by the time the 70-300G had focused on the area he'd high tailed it in the other direction...(which was I guess a good thing).
