Gulf station, PP your thoughts?

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Gulf station, PP your thoughts?

G'day all,

Went for a saunder out to Gulf Station the other day (was bored and although it wasn't open they said yeah come out and wander around, so bewdy :) )... Taken with the Nikkor 12-24

Anyway, was just having a quick play in PP and wanted to hear your thoughts... Softened with a blended gaussian blur layer etc... Not sure myself whether this works or not :?

Yup, it works Andrew, looks great! Not so sure I like the vignetting effect, but the rest is beaut!

Hey Mudder. I think that's a good image and I like what you've done with the black and white treatment. Did you darken the corners as well?

G'day,
Thanks for the feedback, yep applied a vignette (darkened corners) via a curves layer with a feathered selection... Hmmm, think the transition is a smidge sharp though, I'll try it with a softer transition...

I really like the composition in this picture. The rails really lead you into the shot. Well done !

My only two comments/critisisms (IMO), are:

1) the two bright areas in the sky keep distracting my eyes up and away from the barn/foreground.

2) I'm not sure if it is the "sepia look" or not but it seems to me to lack a little bit of contrast, unless it's my monitor (which it may well be :oops: )

If you have time, it would be interesting to see the original....

Re: Contrast, I always seem to whoos out on the contrast... It's been mentioned by others that I've been on workshops with so I'll have to push myself to do more on that side of things... For reason I never "push" the contrast enough...

I've edited the original post so the orig is with the de-sat'ed one at the start of the thread...

Cheers Mudder. I think I personally prefer the colour version, as the sky doesn't distract my eyes like the desaturated version.

Not sure if you've adjusted the "levels" or not, however just having a quick play around with your original image, just adjusting the levels really makes a HUGE difference.

G'day,

I haven't played with the colour version yet, when I first opened it I just thought it might be a good one to try B&W thinking it might suit the old shack... Maybe I need to work on the "brightness" of the cloud formations in the B&W one... I've been playing with some gradients in skies in other images, so I'll have a play later... PP is fun :)

The colour version is almost straight from the cam I think, it had bugger all PP aside from a general sharpen off memory... Was just a quick post in response to the question...
