Hot Lips!

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Hot Lips!

I have never noticed this before but a Wedge Tailed Eagle has some awesome lips! This was taken at Healesville Sanctuary in Melbourne. It is a real privalage to be able to get so close to such a beautiful animal.

Taken with the trusty 50mm 1.8 lens, who needs a 70 - 200VR!!!!!! :) :)

Wow Mal this is 1 nice looking birdy, pitty his beak was not in focus but his eyes are great, this is a top shot and yeh has a nice set of lips, i have never seen one in real life close up so yeh nice to see.

If you were working it's a shame you didn't step to the right (where the sun is coming from) and take a shot from there. Plus it might of allowed you a narrower aperture to get more DOF.

When I say working, I wasn't there to take photos! We were filming, as soon as we finish a shot I whip out my camera and snap of as many as I can get :)
Here is another angle of "Ace"
There was no direct sunlight as it was very overcast when I took these shots.

But my feeling with this one is that the eye contact is not as strong.

2nd shot is much much better. I doubt they'd let the public get that close eh?
I wouldn't mind going up there if I could get decent access.

I too like the second shot better despite the lesser eye contact. With a portrait such as this I think nailing the DOF balance is utmost. Well done. It's a very sharp lens and one on my hit list. :wink:

I dunno, I think that's eye contact.
Remember a bird vision is unlike humans, and mostly from the side of the head out so that they can see in front and behind.

Next time I am in Melbourne I will give you a buzz and let you know. The PR lady was really nice here, unlike another Zoo that is in Melbourne that is not near an old historic mansion, which is another lovely place to visit :)

Unfortunatly we are coming to the end of this series, and only have five more places to visit, Waratah Park (home of Skippy) Manily Ocean World (taking pictures of fish through glass is no good) Mogo Zoo in Batemans Bay, Featherdale Zoo and finally Adelaide Zoo. Got to get my act together and get some good photos out of these places.
