I haven't been using my Tamron much, but at the thought of selling it I put it on today:

Image

It is a very sharp lens, even at 1:1. This is shot is only slightly horzontally cropped, not vertically.

Beautifully crisp clean colours and cuts like a razor. Apart from reach I really don't think you are going to gain anything with sharpness with the 105 Nikkor Heath. Terrific shot.

Thanks marco - you are right - you do have to get pretty close for 1:1!

Here is another - they were all handheld - this one I missed the focus a bit through too narrow an aperture - but I am posting it because of the little spit bubble - or is it drool?

You can see the reflection in the bubble and air bubbles, clever little bee! Great capture heath. Boy you are making me think about the D2X versus the D200 and a good macro lens :?

The D200 plus a battery grip is bigger and heavier than the D2x. I would think that this would make it better for hand-held macros - easier to steady ones hands.

Smart decision Heath. I don't think you'll get a macro sharper than the Tamron. It's a recognised pearler of a lens.
Gee I didn't think the addittion of a grip on the d200 would make it that bulky? Now it all rests on the autofocus reviews :)

Wow - How can you part with a lens that is that good.

Of course your skills behind it are also on a par with the quality of the lens HB.

V. Nice fly and bees.

Heath - beautiful photos!!! I'm pretty sure the bubble you talking about with the bee is regurgitated nectar :) Insects aren't the tidiest of eaters.

And I'm happy to see someone else taking photos of sarcophagids - the fly :)

Keep the lens !!!!!!!!!!!!

Great photos Heath, especially the fly, but after seeing Rel's frog pics I still lust after the 105mm for that little extra reach.

It 'll want to be a whole lot better Chris. I'm sure you are right but just how much better and will it be enugh to distract me from the D2X. Mind you the D200 will allow me to get the macro lens maybe the Sigma 150 , sweet. Can't wait for yu guys to test it thanks to Birddog!

Excellent, impressive shots, Heath. :D

I don't know how you guys do that. Even with my 180mm, the insects won't allow me to get that close. I spent many hours in the attempt, this past summer. It's very frustrating. :(
