Just wondering what you thought - practising tracking birds in flight. I know it's only a pigeon, but had to practise with something :)

It looks pretty sharp from where I'm sitting, could of done with a little fill on the tail feathers. Looks like it's also a fairly big crop?

Agreed.

However, it's hard to tell with this size image. If it's a 100% crop, I'd say that I'm very impressed. But if it's close to full-frame, we just can't see enough detail to comment. Is the wing sharper than the eye? I suspect so but can't tell from here.
We can see the sharpening halos, so you've obviously applied some sharpening to the final file (as would be expected). Maybe a touch too much, but that may be a matter of taste.

Overall, a nice image of a different type of flying rat...

I like it. I like the position of the wing.
What lens did you use to get that? I have never been able to get anything as remotely sharp as that.

Kipper, DaveB & Rokkstar - thank you for your comments. Agreed, I probably did oversharpen, but it is a HUGE crop.... It was taken with the Nikon 80-200 2.8.
Thanks for your comments - it's all a bit different to insect shots :)

For someone who doesn't ordinarily get into these shots (you have to be looking ABOVE the leaf litter occasionally!) I think it's a corker Narelle.

80-200mm?

Simon - did a bad bad thing. Found a second hand 80-200 2.8, and Damian let me buy it :) Weighs a bloody tonne, but worth it. When I come back to work next week, I'll have a left forearm 2 times the size it was when I went on holidays :) I've ordered a 1.7TC from Birddog, so the world is my oyster

blacknstormy,

Firstly congrats on your new purchase! yes it's heavy!

What version of the 80-200 which you purchased? I hope you did with the Nikkor 80-200 AF-S/ 2.8.

Secondly! It's also a bad news for you if you did not score the 80-200/ 2.8 AF-S, the TC 1.7 is on its way to my store this morning, but it didn't work or not mountable with the 80-200/ 2.8 (AF/ or AF-D), it will work or mountable with the 80-200AF-S

Pls. visit this link to see the compatibility of the teleconverter.

Or you should ask first prior to order, and hope the above is not your case.

It's all cool Birddog - its the AFS. Checked it all out before I ordered the TC from you, and before I bought the second hand lens .... but thank you very very much for taking the time to let me know just the same.

Have a great day Birddog :)

does this mean you are not getting close and personal to bugs anymore ?.........or just another weapon.......

just another 'weapon' - feels like one. I have to walk around with it perched ontop of my left forearm, or holding it by the tripod collar. It weighs just over 2 kgs !!!! Needed a fast tracking lens for our fauna surveys, and this was cheaper than the VR, but a very sweet lens.

But it's ok - will be out hunting bugs this evening at Goomburra State Forest, just through Cunningham's Gap on the way to Warwick.....
Hopefully, a couple of rare frogs tonight as well :)
Cheers

You'll get used to it Rel.

But 2kg....pah! The total weight of the 500AFS (3.5kg) with all the other added bits and peices must be around the 5kg mark.

But Kipper, you are a big burly male :) I would kill for the 500, but it would end in divorce :)
Have a great day

There are a few girls on NSN that lug Canon gear of the same weight around and handhold it without a tripod for flight shots :)
