I took this kookaburra photo while out walking yesterday afternoon, using my budget Tamron 300mm. I need to upgrade, who doesn't? :) It's got a tag on it's leg.

Nice kooka pic. :) There is always something else on the list. Like the composition and nice and sharp. With the bright spots in the background, it might be worthwhile considering toning down the exposure and using a bit of fill flash to compensate. I took some koala pics a while back and wish I had given it a try.

BBJ: Thanks for your comment. I've taken some great clear, sharp photos with this lens before, but only if the subject is quite still and the lighting good. It's slow to focus, and for this kookaburra shot I would have liked an aperture a little better than f5.6 :?

Andyt: Thanks very much for your comment. :)

Nicole: Thanks for the compliment. :) The SB800 is on (the top of) my shopping list, I would have loved it for this photo. You are right about the lighting, the eye and area around the eye was originally VERY dark because of the sun behind (to the left of) the bird. I had to selectively reduce the shadows otherwise the eye could not be seen at all. I think the kookaburra would have been too far away for the on-camera flash. :?

Good Shot Potatis, nothing wrong with the clarity of this lens according to your shot.

Only thing I would do is climb the neighbouring tree so you can get a nice "on level with the creature" shot  [/b]

Yes, give me the rope and you can show me how it's done. :) I'll watch you climbing trees with your mighty D2x and watch as the bird flies away when you're halfway up.

Seriously though, you do have a good point. What you say would make a much better shot. :) I'll see if I can pack a ladder in my camera bag next time I go out. :D
