A dog and his ball

Took this this afternoon.. aim was to give it some rustic feel a shallow blurry feeling.. kinda like looking at an old photo.. probably failed... but im playing around anyways... used photoshop to adjust it from colour and make it black and white.. hope you like.. any comments welcome

Great image and it sure suits B&W but I'm not a fan of the frame at all, I think a nice black/white fram would compliment this image much more appropriately. Well done though!

Looks great Zeeke, but that blown highlight to the left of his face is a bit put off. If this was not blown this picture would be bloody fantastic and a great shot worthy of hangin on the wall and i like the B&W, still it is a nice picture. Well done.

Hi Tim - at the risk of drawing cries of eternal damnation from others, I'm going to say I think this could be better. That's not to say I don't like it, or that it's crap - I just think it could be better

What I find most distracting is the lost detail in the shadows - especially the right side of the face. This dog has character, and to most, character is usually summed up in the face.

[start woffle] I could go on about a whole heap of studies that show beyond doubt that, to humans at least, the most important aspect of any animal is it's face - but I won't. To be honest, I don't know of any such studies, and I certainly couldn't point you in their direction. I did hear something like that on TV the other day though, so it must be right ;) [end woffle]

I don't really mind the slightly blown highlight on the left - these things usually look ok when converted to black & white or similar (as you've done nicely here). But if you could do some local dodging perhaps to bring up more of the face, I think you'd be pleased with the effort

I also gotta say that the frame does nothing for this print - a more simple black, or slightly brown-black, would do it much more justice

All these things I say as my own ever so humble opinion, and in the end, you must make the decision on the quality or otherwise. After all, it's your pic - and presumably your dog

Miracle if he's the son... lol.. he got nutted when he was 4mos old... and he's 2yrs old... he's a wirey stumpy legged jack russell..

Cheers for the comments.. the frame was quickly done... didnt pay mucch attention to it unfortunately... when i re-do the image hopefully adjusting it a bit more so its more pleasing... ill do the frame better

Excellent comp and BW conversion. The blown highlight is a little annoying, but really, its still a great shot.

Sheepie's comments basically echo my feelings, along with Geoff's about the frame.

The loss of shadow detail - on the face and the side of the dog - is an important negative here. given the blown highlights on the other side, there's clearly some serious exposure issues here that are not easily dealt with.

A reflector on the shaded side, or perhaps the addition of some flash along with an adjustment in the EV may have been of use.

As to the frame ... let me just say that I have yet to see a frame added to an image in this manner that I think actually adds to the image in question.

Cheers for the replys... next time i try to photograph the ball hungry fiend.. ill try using some flash to remove some annoying shadows... not easy with a nearly pure white dog cept for a few facial marking get blown highlights all over the place...
