Crested Pigeon

Not a particularly spectacular shot but I wanted to see how the SB800 handled the near dark conditions when I snapped this little fella in one of my backyard trees. The bokeh is all over the place due to a stack of branches and leaves in front of the subject as well as behind.
Comments welcome.

Link is working OK for me.
The contrast between the bird and the background image is a little too much for me - the bird looks like it has been cut and pasted on to the background (Ok, maybe it's not
that bad
).
The bird itself looks nice and sharp though.

The "noisy" bokeh (well not noise as in pixel noise) kind of takes your eye away from the pigeon. Otherwise that's the best looking pigeon I've ever seen, not like those that poop on you at Central station.

Alpha 7 - not sure what's wrong there as it seems to be working my end and others have been able to view it.
Thanks Kinetic - I knew I was facing a losing battle with the background but I couldn't compose the shot any other way as I only had a tiny window of access through the branches to shoot. Just have to get out the axe I suppose...

That image looks just gorgeous on my screen! The colours are perfect....the boke brilliant...and the bird looks so real I am afraid to move unless he takes off. Nice work with the SB800!

thanks for that. the 300 works well within the limits of its range!!
I quite often find that 400mm isnt enough for birding work.
Just for laughs I put my old reflex nikkor 1000mm f11 on the d70.
It certainly reaches out and touches but @ f11 way too slow and also way too much magnification
would love a nice fast 500 or 600 prime
one day...

Doing a trip to Lamington National Park on Tuesday - heaps of birds - and the guy I'm going with is bringing along a 200-400VR. I'm looking forward to strapping that baby on!

I have the 80-400vr and have got a few decent shots of birds, a few were posted here I still dont think it is the right lens for birding.
The AF is too slow for flight shots. having said that, I have got some sharp shots using it.
havent tried the 200-400 though

You may strap that 200-400 VR on but you won't be carrying it for long. That is one very heavy sucker of a lens. It's like carrying a log.
