you used the zoom on the kit lens and got a tripped out effect
welcome to the uberzone, see you on the flipside.

I suggest exposing the face for about 5 secs and then zoom on the last 1 sec so you get the face and the zoom effect rather than such an abstract result, this kind of thing works well on lights, like cityscapes

Matt, like the concept, just not this particular example. I am sure with experimentation (and a lot of patience from your good lady) you will get a keeper. Wendell suggestions seem worth a try

shouldn't you be content for a while that your smoke images are going to be published in a high end fashion/design/culture magazine?

I looked at, but didn't comment on, either of the posts since they didn't grab me, but I think you're being way too tough on yourself saying they were total crap. Reflect on this - where would we be if great artists of the past destroyed their sketches and other studies while working on their great paintings or sculptures. I think the documentation of how you get somewhere can be as important as the finished product since there's a lot to be gleaned from the process by others. A more personal example - your first smoke studies are there to give heart to those who aspire to your finished product.
