Quotes of the day
I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conlusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleages, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives. ~ Leo Tolstoy

One of the first fire escapes of any type was invented in 18th-century England. It was a machine called a fire escape, which, being fastened to the window, would enable a person to descend to the street without injury. In the United States and Europe in the 1950s and 1960s, it became clear in the poorer areas of cities that fire escapes were commonly used for everything, but their intended purpose. Some residents placed items on the fire escape (chairs, bicycles or plants), which added weight and impeded emergency escape.
