DxO Labs Rates the Nikon D600 Sensor #3...

Postby Remorhaz on Thu Sep 20, 2012 10:30 am

DxO Labs just published their assessment of the Nikon D600 sensor, rating its 24-megapixel senor the third best of all time behind the two different versions of the Nikon 800.

Obviously this doesn't automatically make the D600 a great camera but it does bode well for what the sensor might be capable of

Overall Score: 94 (3rd Place)
Portrait (Color Depth) (Bits): 25.1 (6th)
Landscape (Dynamic Range) (EVs): 14.2 (3rd)
Sports (Low-Light ISO): 2980 (2nd)

Note for comparison:
- the D7000 is 18th on the list with scores of 80 (18th), 23.5 (29th), 13.9 (5th) and 1167 (20th)
- the D700 is 16th on the list with scores of 80 (16th), 23.5 (30th), 12.2 (44th) and 2303 (6th)

Im with Gerry...you are trying to justify making the purchase.

You know it - although you also know I don't need any justification :)

I went and played with one today - pretty nice
- it doesn't feel much bigger than my D7000 (mostly thicker in the grip)
- controls are mostly familiar (DoF preview and Fn are swapped around - perhaps this is standard on the pro bodies?)
- the AF grid appears to be about what I expect on DX only in the FX frame (so much more space around the AF cluster) - this bothers me a bit (mostly because I am a compose and change focus point style shooter - esp with portraits - and often use the AF points away from centre on my D7000)
- the viewfinder is huge and nice :)
- that lockable mode dial is pretty easy to adjust but again perhaps a little bothersome (although I do quite often accidentally change this on my D7000 so it might prove useful)

Why - you thinking of trading up? :P You surely wouldn't want to go to a lame 6D

I'd keep my D7000 anyway and try and sell my D90 and maybe some of my DX glass

You've got to love the massive Amazon discount: Down from $2099.95 to $2096.95. That's not even 0.15%.
