D4 High ISO samples ????????????????

Postby inmotion on Thu Jan 19, 2012 8:17 pm

Are Nikon trying to raise the expectation by releasing so few sample images
I hear that no images were allowed to be taken at CES during the release and the publishes images
claiming high ISO--- not nearly high enough for my use. I will probably upgrade my D3S but show me sample
images at 25000-52000 ISO. I was about to justify the 200mm F2 for indoor sport use but I am thinking now to invest in the D4 and use F2.8 lens
I currently shoot up tp 12500 ISO whith the D3S and 70-200F2.8 but run out of shutter speed late at night
 jim I may have to wait for an actual photographer to get one to show what its capable of in the mid range of there claims

studio samples are up at dpreview. i think the d3s holds its own very well, in fact, from these studio versions, the raw d3s files look a little cleaner to me. there certainly is not a stop improvement from the d3s to the d4. this does not bode well for the d800's 36mp sensor.

Hi Rooz
Thanks for posting this link my first look at genuine high ISO sample images
But I beg to differ on your opinion I set Jpeg D3s 25600 iso D2 102400 iso and using the queens head as a reference the D4 still has more detail and maybee less noise-- isnt that 2 stops
As I shoot Jpeg and 12500 -25600 iso with the D3S then I would hope for a big improvement as I am looking to shoot at 25600 with a D4 to save a lens upgrade
cheers jim

I didn't bother with jpeg, I only looked at the raw. If the improvement is only in the jpegs well, that's a software upgrade essentially. $6k is a lot of money to pay for better NR algorithms.

I found it difficult to compare the samples. They where shot at different apertures and focusing distances. I would have expected dpreview to get those basic things right when posting side-by-side comparisons.

Thom Hogan suggests that there is likely to be little difference between the D3s and the D4 for high-ISO images. The main difference, it seems, is improved autofocus.

I wonder whether we will see less incremental changes in photo tech until something radical comes along.

That would be in line with the dialectic law of the passage of quantitative changes into qualitative changes. In other words, that's how things work :D
