A Meet in Melbourne !

PostPosted: Thu Nov 11, 2004 2:28 pm

Hi there fellow Melbourne members.

We seen to have reached the sort of numbers where a meet could be organised.

Our sydney counterparts have had a few meets organised, initially in the form of getting together somewhere photogenic to take some shots.

So, as a first step, who would be interested in a get together, somewhere pleasant, d70s at the ready, take a few shots and shoot the breeze.

What do you think, firstly of the idea, and secondly about when and where? I am thinking maybe a Sunday in the next few weeks.

Well done Greg, this may be the start of your first meet.
Good luck

Hi Greg,
Any invitation for Sydney member?

The way things are going Birdie, it might be only Sydney members :)

All welcome in Melbourne, no worries about that.

Hi Greg. Sounds like a great idea.

Any day on the weekend I reckon. :) There are too many places to choose from though! 8)

Well I managed to convince my dad to buy a D70 :D. He's coming to visit with my mum from 4th December. He might want to come. So then Sunday in a few weeks would be good!

Oh Greg B
What I wouldn't give to be able to make it to your first meet. My picnic basket would be overflowing with roast duck. Good luck with it.

Sounds good Nicole. Where are they coming from?

11/12 dec or 18/19 dec might be good.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Greg, they're coming down from Qld. Either of those weekends is good for us.

After all those responses in the other Melbourne thread where has everyone gone?

Beats me Nicole, they have evaporated like half remembered dreams.

We shall wait for them to re-materialise.

Never ending or beginning.

Which raises some philosophical questions.

Well, I seem to spend a fair bit of time going around in circles, so maybe it is. If I go fast enough, I could catch up with myself and have a very alarming experience.

So is anyone else up for this meet? 8) Weather is starting to look good again so could be a lot of fun.

G'day all,
I'd be interested in some type of catch up... Hard to get a week-end before Chrissy though...

Cheers,
Mudder

Thanks for the weather update Fozzie. Looking forward to the warmer weather.

Greg, sounds like after Christmas might be better for some. Due to O/S trip, first available weekend for me will be 15/16 Jan.

I'd love to come, but I'm in the USA for two weeks (1st to 16th), then going up the Coast between Christmas and New Years. After that would be awesome though. Don't think the wife would be up to it just after I get back though considering I'm leaving her with an 8 yo, 6yo and an 8wk old :D

Is it only for D70 users? My sister might be interested. Her site is here. She is a Canon user and just bought her first DC, but she took out the Sale Camera club's photo of the year this year.

Her website is here: http://www.jenniferfrenchphotography.com
The third picture is the one that won the award.

There are a lot of overseas trips going on here :)

It looks like late January/early Feb will be the go.

kurokaze - you sister will be welcome despite her Canon leanings :) (She has some nice photos, by the way)

We are talking about a very casual get together for the melbourne chapter, take a few shots, have lunch probably, that sort of thing. If anyone has some thoughts about the "where", that would be good.

Early Feb would be great. I should be back then as I have Jones/Brabham tickets for the F1GP :)

We're in Prost, IIRC; see the separate F1GP thread under Events.

A meeting during the GP weekend would be a good idea, methinx. We'll be staying on Lygon St (Forza Ferrari!) and seeing as it's handy to a great variety of eateries and as well as Vanbar, I would be doubtful if anyone could suggest a better location. :)

And I'm still trying to figure out where/when to go for the holidaze.

There's no bargains available to the US west coast until late Jan; I'm trying to find somewhere OS for the Chrissie-NYE period.

Any suggestions?

I was in Moss last year, then G/A for the other two years. Decided to go one better this year.

Yes, Jones/Brabham should be better. We've been Fangio for the last few years; Prost provides better photographic opportunities.

Maybe we could have one meet up in early Feb and then another in early March for the GP. Haven't been to the GP for a while.

Gary, depends on how you want to spend your Christmas. Warm weather or cold weather. Relaxing holiday or active holiday. Too many places. Almost 4 weeks to go and we'll be in Borneo.

So guys, do we have a time and exact location for the Grand Prix/Lygon St Friday night? I definitely want to attend this.

Maybe we can meet at Gary's hotel and go from there?

I was talking with Leigh about this just the other day.

While meeting at the hotel is fine, I recall that there's a pizza place on Lygon St, on the opposite side of the road from the park, and perhaps a tad south of it. They sell their pizzas by the metre length, or something along those lines.

Leigh and I both felt it was a suitable location, but I'm open to suggestions; we certainly do have our favourite places on Lygon, but this one is less formal and less expensive.

Suggestions from the locals, who should be much more knowledgable in this?

IIRC we're staying at the Downtowner, which is only a block away from the action anyway.

Actually Dad thought I was a suitable location.

I didn't really care.

Provided there's food and plenty of Ferrari people to laugh at, I'm fine. :)

I don't know Lygon Street all that well, but I do admire eating establishments that sell their wares by length.

Do any of our Melbourne members know the place Gary is talking about?

A quick search on Citysearch shows:

One Metre Pizza
152 Lygon St, Carlton

Wow, there's a meeting point called One Metre Pizza, mouth watering!
Leigh, can we have our D70User banner hang up there earlier to mark a rendez vous spot?
So everyone won't miss it!

I think we need more lateral thinking on this one.

How about we just get them to make a 1 metre long pizza with the toppings shaped to look like the logo.

Oh yes! you can pre-order with the D70Users logo ontop of the pizza like a birthday cake, decorated with salami, olives, cheese, prawn, etc.. those will make up a nice logo for the D70.

Yers that is the place. Its on the same side as the Downtowner, just north of Queensberry St. Can't say I have been there though. I like Toto's, which is just about diagonally opposite the Downtowner, on the cnr of Queensberry. There are of course lots more a little futher north, in the main Carlton shopping drag. This is where you will find the Ferrari supporters Nnnnsic.

We have, and it was quite acceptable for a casual feed.

Leigh likes to be the stand-out in these sorts of events. He'll be the lone black and silver cap in a tsunami of red!

But yes, we're simply talking about the Friday night; we have our favourites that we go to on the Saturday and Sunday nights, and yes, they're in the main drag, further north.

I'm suggesting the one metre pizza place because it's more casual than Toto's (and easier to get into too, IME), but of course this is still open to discussion.

Dad, one year there was another rebel... I seem to remember he was wearing something in a shade of green that rarely works.

And my shades of blue and silver always work... this year, there'll probably be more, what with the "pride of Australia" on board.
